Snarky becomes a new Substack venture
In the last few years, I’ve had a lot of fun by putting on my hat as The Snarky Editor and commenting about the awkward, silly, and sometimes hilarious editing errors found in published books.
Now I’m expanding the Snarky Editor to a larger audience, by adding a Substack column where I plan to post weekly. (You can sign up to get the Substack column here. It’s a free subscription.)
I’ll continue to post the occasional column here on my blog, but The Snarky Editor’s main presence will be on Substack in the future.
Let me explain a little about how The Snarky Editor works.
As well as being an author, I’m a teacher, editor, coach, and mentor. I deal with vulnerable writers, whether they’re my students or they’ve come to me for feedback on their manuscripts. I treat that relationship as a confidential one. Editor/author relationships and teacher/student relationships are private and safe, and they depend on trust. Writers put their faith in me to deal sensitively with their work, and I treasure that trust far too much to violate it. We’re working on first drafts — ideas in development. Any errors, mistakes, or misconceptions that we uncover in those working relationships stay between us.
But published books? Stories the author has decided are ready for public release and consumption? That’s a totally different thing. They’re fair game. So the Snarky Editor comes out of hiding now and then to comment on the eye-rolling errors that escape the author and editor and make it into print.
I hope you’ll join me on Substack and continue to enjoy the Snark!
